The Hop & Vine in Kingston upon Hull is celebrating the news of its latest accolade. It has been named ‘Hull & East Yorkshire Cider Pub of the Year 2009’ by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
The Hop & Vine is situated in the basement of premises on Albion Street and the business is owned and run by Stewart Campbell and Janet Rowan. They have always supported real cider and provide an interesting choice of three regularly changing ciders (or two ciders and a perry) that are obtained from cider producers throughout England and Wales.
Walter’s in Scale Lane was runner-up and the Wellington Inn in Russell Street was third. The Whalebone in Wincolmlee was also a finalist.
The four pubs were nominated by local members and were then visited by a panel of judges who made their decision after carefully considering the Quality, Temperature and Price of the ciders and perries available. Also considered were aspects of the pub itself: Service & Welcome, Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning and Style/Décor.
David Litten, CAMRA’s Hull & East Yorkshire Branch Apple Representative said, “The Hop & Vine probably just edged it because of the choice that they offer, but all four pubs were worthy contenders for this year’s title.”
Alan Canvess, CAMRA’s Hull & East Yorkshire Branch Chairman, presented framed certificates to the licensees of the Hop & Vine, Walters and the Wellington Inn during a Cider Crawl of the four pubs, held last Sunday afternoon.
When presenting the winning certificate to Stewart and Janet he said, “The Hop & Vine has shown consistency over the last three years and now has a full set of certificates, after being third last year and runner-up the year before.”
October is designated as Cider Month in CAMRA’s campaigning calendar.
