THE WELLINGTON INN IS VOTED KINGSTON UPON HULL PUB OF THE YEAR 2008

The Wellington Inn has been has been named ‘Kingston upon Hull Pub of the Year 2008’ by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale – Hull & East Yorkshire Branch.
CAMRA members voted for their ‘City (Kingston upon Hull)’, ‘East Yorkshire Town’, and East Yorkshire Village’ Pubs of the Year 2008 after carefully considering the following criteria: Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning, Quality of Beer, Style/Decor, Service and Welcome and Value for Money. For the pub to be eligible for the competition the licensee had to be present since the 1st January 2008.
The Wellington Inn on Russell Street in Kingston upon Hull is owned and run by Richard & Janette Gant. This is the fourth Year in succession that they have won the competition, having being a joint winner in 2005 and 2007 and winning it outright in 2006 and now 2008.
It is described in the new 2009 CAMRA Good Beer Guide as: “Hidden free house gem just off Freetown Way, this former Hull Brewery pub dates from 1861 and serves up to six guest micro beers. It features a walk-in cooler stocking over 100 European bottled beers, note the impressive glass-fronted display in the back bar. Farmhouse ciders and perries can also be found, plus specialist European beers on draught and Lindisfarne fruit wines.”
Branch Chairman, Alan Canvess, will present Richard & Janette with a framed certificate on the evening of Saturday 17th January at 10.00 pm.
Walters on Scale Lane, owned and run by Alan Murphy and Chrissy Fleming, was runner up in the 2008 competition. They were presented with a framed certificate on Wednesday 7th January.
It is described in the new 2009 CAMRA Good Beer Guide as: “Contemporary bar, recently established as a free house by the former licensee of the nearby Old Black Boy and operating an over 21’s door policy. Up to eight regularly changing guest beers are available, plus Belgian and German draught and bottled beers, fruit beers and Lindisfarne fruit wines.
The George Hotel in the Land Of Green Ginger (a finalist in the 2007 competition), the Three John Scotts in Lowgate, and The Whalebone in Wincolmlee were the other finalists in the 2008 competition.
